The Château de Bel Ombre is an enchanting Anglo-Indian colonial style family house, set in French Gardens punctuated with ancient trees, this 19th century property has been tastefully restored to its former glory. Interesting fact, the Château was constructed by Sir Hajee Jackaria Hajee Ahmed, a rich Indian landowner, back in the last decade of the 19th century and is surrounded by a certain mystery, since the man never made it to Mauritius.

A SWEET STORY

 

The history of the island is intertwined to the story of the sugarcane which started with the first men to inhabit the island.

 

Bel Ombre sugar estate is one of the oldest sugar estate established in 1765 under the french rule.

 

Vestiges from the hard work of those men who developed the region can be found nearby the Château with the ruins of the old sugar cane factory, the Frédérica chimney dating from 1855 and the batelage, a reminder of how sugar was transported by boat to the harbour to be sent to Europe.

CHARLES TELFAIR

 

The Domaine de Bel Ombre with origins dating back to 1765 unfolds two and a half centuries of history, once a sugar estate, now a unique integrated tourist destination having witnessed a long list of owners, some strategic to the development of Mauritius and the South of the island like Charles Edward Telfair.

 

Charles Telfair was a famous Irish naturalist and botanist who was a pioneer in the field of agricultural diversification and modernisation of sugar processing and a great opposer to slavery. He called the Domaine de Bel Ombre, the small Eden and Heritage Le Telfair was named as a tribute to this historic figure.
