If you consider holidays as the time for culinary treats, Heritage Resorts will give you access to one of the finest addresses. With regards to the setting, the menu and featured events, the Château de Bel Ombre is a must for gourmet visitors.
1. The setting
For those who do not know the Château de Bel Ombre yet, imagine a 19th-century colonial mansion restored back to its glorious state.
Today, the Château houses a restaurant that opens on a large terrace and vast colonnades, typical of colonial architecture. The main hall boasts a vintage décor with raw silk tapestry, lithographs, opulent furniture, where the influences of the East India Company and more contemporary lines blend together. Flanked with Damask leather club chairs and high stools, the bar takes on a bold English smoke house look.
As for the outdoor scenery, the Château enjoys a slightly uphill location at the heart of the Domaine de Bel Ombre, offering fantastic views on the mountains on the one side, on the golf course and the sea on the other. The terrace opens on a long garden and a splendid fountain, which leaves us with a pleasant sense of infinity. Watching over the Domaine is a two-century-old tree, which adds elegance and splendour to the place.
2. The menu
Every exceptional restaurant has an exceptional menu. Chef Govinden has carefully prepared that of the Château, bearing three major ingredients in mind: refinement, boldness and generosity.
The Chef favours local cuisine based on the use of products grown on and provided by the Domaine. Such an authentic cuisine is completed with delicate flavours, fine ingredients, creative touches and a mix of sweet, savoury and spicy tastes… All is fashioned with the true passion and generosity, which are typically attributed to Mauritian hospitality.
As you go through the Château’s Greater menu, you will travel across the hunting ground, where the game roams in total freedom; then you will get to discover treasures of the Indian Ocean; and finally, you will stroll along the farm and garden, stopping – of course – at the Chef’s cooking pot. The menu obviously closes on a sweet temptation.
Since 2015, the Château de Bel Ombre has welcomed world-renowned wine-producers. They come to promote their products and arrange for connoisseurs to taste their wines during wine-pairing dinners. The line-up includes prestigious labels such as Château Lascombes (May 2015), Château CLINET (January 2016) and Château Leoville Barton (March 2016).
Among the Château’s rendez-vous are the traditional garden aperitif and the five-course gala dinner, featuring selected wines, and their producers are there to educate guests on the unique qualities of their products. In the background, music is played by a trio and a pianist.
You will soon realise that the Château is the Domaine’s emblem!
