Tips to plan your holidays

You will find below some information that may be useful if you are planning to spend your next holiday in sunny Mauritius.

Major airlines offer regular flights to and from the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, in Plaisance. A new state-of the art passenger terminal expands the capacity of the airport while improving passenger comfort. The national carrier, Air Mauritius, also serves some 20 cities in Europe, Asia and Africa.


The pleasant climate of the island is divided into two seasons. During the hot season, between November and April, average air temperature ranges between 20°C and 35° C depending on the regions and is tempered by south-east trade winds. Water temperature is around 26°C. This is the period when tropical storms are more likely to develop; the latter have been a rare occurrence in recent year. Rainfall is lower in coastal regions than in the central part of the island. Mauritius enjoys a cool and dry climate between May and September with temperatures ranging between 15°C and 25°C and still plenty of sunshine.

Currency information

The country’s currency is the Mauritian rupee and visitors can easily change their foreign currency or traveller’s cheques. Major credit cards are also accepted at most the points of sale.

As at November 2012, 1 euro was worth approximately Rs 40, 1 US dollar was trading against Rs 30 and 1 pound sterling against Rs 50. For your convenience, you can change your currencies at the reception of Heritage hotels. Various other points are available on the island, including money changers and dedicated change counters at the airport as well as all banks in the country.

Banks are generally open between 9am and 3pm from Monday to Thursday and until 5pm on Fridays. They are normally closed on weekends and public holidays.


Mauritius has a good road network with more than 2,000km of roads linking towns and villages across the country. Driving is on the left and road signs are in English. The speed limit is 40 km/h in town and vehicles can travel at speeds up to 110 km/h on motorways.

Public transport includes affordable buses services which some air-conditioned vehicles, as well as taxis. International licence holders can also rent a car from different rental companies.
